Duplicat's Diary

Windy

We’re experiencing enhanced tradewinds at the moment. This means that despite being tucked up close to the shore, as you move further into the atoll, the waves make it a wet ride anywhere. We’ve been back to the village and met our host family, Soki and Ba. In fact, this couple were the hosts when Nina was last here on Pirlouit too and Soki recognised Nina straight away.

The village has a beautiful lagoon of its own, though without the useful cut through the reef for ships. So everything arrives on the other side of a hill, making it a 20 minute walk. Everything is carried from the landing to the village over this hill.

The church with its set of drums outside to summons people..

Soki and Ba asked if we’d like anything, and I suggested some green bananas. This is what you get when you ask a Fiji for such a thing…

These Lady’s fingers bananas are beautifully sweet but we’re going to be eating quite a few and quite quickly!

We see Soki and Ba again tomorrow, and then we’ll spend a bit of time exploring some of the other anchorages in the lagoon. Until now, we’ve been enjoying our isolation about 900metres north of the other anchored boats. The compendium that we use for useful info in Fiji shows an anchor spot south of the sand spit, but where we are is just as good. Boats tend to follow the guides though, so we’ve had this spot to ourselves. That is until this morning, when another boat came and anchored right behind us (70 metres away, you can see them in the photo of the bananas). Tonnes of space here (another mile to the pass), so a bit unsure why they seemed to have dropped anchor so close. Boats do seem to attract boats though..
